"The Right Hon. Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, K.G., and His Times" by Alexander Charles Ewald, c.1881. Published in London, Edinburgh and Dublin by William MacKenzie, this impressive complete five-volume set is presented in 4to format (7.25" x 10.75") with full royal blue cloth over beveled boards. The upper boards feature elaborate black and gilt decoration, while the rear boards have a blindstamped oval device. The spines are richly decorated with gilt lettering and black and gilt ornamentation, with all edges gilt.
Each volume contains six engraved frontispieces depicting Disraeli and his contemporaries at various stages of life. The title pages are printed in red and black, with the text arranged in two columns. Very little foxing is present, primarily confined to the first and last leaves of each volume.
Condition includes minor edgewear, lightly bumped and rubbed corners, slightly ruffled spine ends with tiny closed tears, and some minor board scuffing. Volume I has some weakening at the gutter connecting the front board to the text block. Overall, an exceptionally attractive Victorian five-volume set with striking gilt bindings, well suited to collectors of Disraeli, Victorian history, British political history, and fine 19th-century bookbinding.
