8vo.(5" x 8") 1868. Beeton, S.O. (Ed.). London: Ward, Lock, & Tyler, Warwick House. Full polished calf with decorative gilt and blindstamp rule to covers. Spine with five gilt decorated raised bands, gilt title and year on green leather in second compartment. Overall gilt filigree floral design to all others. Minor edgewear. Marbled endpapers, edges reddened. A beautiful, thick book with over 50 full page engraved plates, some in color. Two additional novels have been bound to the rear of this book; Cudjo's Cave and The Three Scouts. An attestation page at the rear of the three books states "The Three Scouts and Cudjo's Cave. Originally it was the Editor's intention to have supplemented the story of The Three Scouts with an account of the most famous among the Federal and Confederate leaders. Another narrative, however, has been written, so full of incident and interest as to procure for it a preference over the biographies of American Generals. This narrative - entitled Cudjo's Cave, has even greater merit thanThe Three Scouts; and, together, they form an admirable history of some of the extraordinary events of the Great American Civil War. Cudjo's Cave, as it acquaints us with the earlier life and exploits of a few of the personages figuring in The Three Scouts, should, in the binding, precede the tale just concluded." Pages 21-28 of Gudjo's Cave have been miscut by the printer (see pic) at the foot of the page, affecting the last line of text on each page. It is still legible, you can still read the story, but miscut nonetheless.
