Complete six-volume Letters and Journals portion of Murray and Scribner’s monumental revised edition of Byron’s works, edited by Rowland E. Prothero. The volumes trace Byron’s life from childhood and Cambridge through his travels in Greece and Albania, meteoric literary fame, relationships and controversies, European exile, years in Italy, political involvement, and finally his participation in the Greek War of Independence and death at Missolonghi in 1824.
The set comprises: Volume I: Byron’s letters and autobiographical material covering his childhood, schooling, Cambridge years, early poetry, English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, and his travels through Albania and Greece, concluding with the death of his mother. It also includes several substantial appendices, including Byron’s review of Wordsworth and material concerning contemporary reviews of his work.
Volume II: Covers roughly August 1811-April 1814, including the publication and reception of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, his emergence as a London celebrity, parliamentary activity, The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos, and his journal of November 1813-April 1814. Appendices include parliamentary speeches, Lady Caroline Lamb material, correspondence with Walter Scott, and contemporary newspaper attacks on Byron.
Volume III: Letters and journals from Byron’s turbulent years surrounding his marriage and separation, his departure from England, travels through Switzerland, and the beginning of his Italian exile. The volume covers approximately 1814-1817.
Volume IV: Correspondence and journals from approximately 1817-1820, principally Byron’s years in Venice and Italy, his literary activity, personal relationships, and increasingly strong involvement with Italian political affairs.
Volume V: Continues the Italian years, approximately 1820-1822, including his associations with the Carbonari and Italian revolutionary politics, his relationship with Teresa Guiccioli, and correspondence concerning his later writings and literary controversies.
Volume VI: Covers Byron’s final period, including his departure from Italy and his commitment to the cause of Greek independence, culminating in his arrival at Missolonghi and his death there in April 1824.
