Born Cornelis Cornelissen van den Steen in Bocholt, Flanders (now Belgium) in 1567, Cornelius a Lapide joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1592 and was ordained a priest in 1595. A gifted scholar, he taught Sacred Scripture and Hebrew at the University of Louvain and later at the Collegio Romano (the Roman College) in Rome, where he spent the last two decades of his career. He is best known for his extensive commentaries on nearly the entire Bible, deeply rooted in the Catholic tradition.
