"Fore and Aft: The Story of the Fore & Aft Rig from the Earliest Times to the Present Day, With Over 150 Illustrations and Plans" by E. Keble Chatterton, published in 1912 by J. B. Lippincott Company in Philadelphia and London by Seeley, Service & Co. This illustrated maritime history explores the development of fore-and-aft sailing rigs, offering an engaging reference for sailors, sailing enthusiasts, and collectors of nautical literature.

Octavo (6.75" x 9.75"), 347 pages. Bound in full blue cloth with gilt lettering and a tipped-on color plate depicting ships at sea on the upper cover, gilt spine lettering and decoration, and a gilt top edge. Illustrated with more than 150 illustrations and plans. The original dust jacket is lacking.

Condition shows minor edgewear, lightly bumped and rubbed corners, and ruffled spine ends with small closed tears. The spine is sun-darkened with lighter spots, and foxing appears throughout, mostly in the margins. A small bookplate belonging to Gherardi Davis, American politician and executive, is affixed to the front pastedown.

A characterful early twentieth-century nautical volume for collectors of maritime history, sailing literature, and the evolution of traditional sailing vessels.
