"Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám," rendered into English verse by Edward FitzGerald, with illustrations by Edmund Dulac, published circa 1930 in New York by George H. Doran. This celebrated collection of translated Persian poetry reflects on the fleeting nature of life, love, fate, and the passage of time. The volume is illustrated with 12 tipped-in color plates by Dulac, whose evocative artwork complements the poem’s dreamlike atmosphere.
Octavo (6.5" x 9"). 191 pages. Lacking the dust jacket. Bound in full green cloth with an embossed arabesque design framing a centered gilt device of two elephants and the gilt title on the upper board. The rear board is plain. The book has light blue endpapers and marbled pastedowns. The spine is sun-darkened, with faded gilt lettering. The binding shows edgewear, lightly bumped and rubbed corners, and ruffled spine ends with tiny closed tears. One corner is rubbed almost through to the boards, and a half-inch tear appears at the upper joint. There are lighter stains along the board edges and a light pink stain on the title page.
An attractive illustrated edition of a poetic classic, appealing to collectors of Persian literature, vintage poetry, and Edmund Dulac’s celebrated book illustrations.
