He is often credited as the first English writer to publish a book of letters, Epistolae Ho-Elianae (often referred to as Familiar Letters), which provides a lively and detailed account of 17th-century European life, politics, and culture. His letters capture observations from his travels across Europe and convey his personal insights, often mixed with wit and wisdom, on everything from politics to language, religion, and social customs. Howell worked as a diplomat and agent for British merchants and often traveled across Europe, where he acted as a mediator in trade negotiations and other diplomatic efforts.
