- In the 1920's the author, an Austrian scientist, was considered one of the foremost biologists in the world. THE NEW YORK TIMES called him the next Darwin. Many of Kammerer's experiments dealt with breeding various amphibians in environments different from their usual habitat. The experiments put him in the middle of a worldwide controversy with prominent scientists on both sides of the issue. In 1926 an article in NATURE by Dr. G. K. Noble, Curator of Reptiles of the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, disputed Kammerer's findings. Kammerer committed suicide six weeks later. The suicide lead many researchers to believe that Kammerer may have perpetrated a hoax.

"The Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics" by Dr. Paul Kammerer, translated by A. Paul Maerker-Branden, published in New York by Boni and Liveright in 1924. Kammerer, an Austrian biologist once hailed by *The New York Times* as a potential successor to Darwin, became internationally controversial for experiments involving the breeding of amphibians in environments different from their natural habitats. His research sparked a major scientific debate over heredity and the inheritance of acquired traits, making this volume a fascinating document in the history of evolutionary biology.
Octavo (5.75" x 9"), 414 pages, bound in full burgundy ribbed cloth with gilt spine lettering and a deckled fore-edge. Illustrated with 43 drawings and plates, including folded and color illustrations, all present. The original dust jacket is lacking.
Condition: Very minor edgewear overall, with bumped and rubbed corners and ruffling at the head and foot of the spine. A compelling historical volume for collectors interested in evolutionary theory, heredity, genetics, and the scientific controversies of the early twentieth century.
