Essays on Physiognomy; For the Promotion and the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind.

Lavater’s influential Essays on Physiognomy argues that a person’s character and temperament could be interpreted from facial features, expressions, and bodily appearance. Though physiognomy is now regarded as a pseudoscience, the work had enormous cultural influence in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, affecting literature, portraiture, psychology, and ideas about human character.
