This book comprises 100 albumen photographic prints of country houses and estates just outside Glasgow—accompanied by descriptive texts about the houses and their resident families. Annan’s project was commissioned by members of Glasgow’s old aristocracy and wealthy merchant class who were concerned about rapid urban transformation erasing their ancestral surroundings. They sought to preserve a visual record of these estates as the city expanded—melding social history, geography, and a fading architectural heritage
