- The narrative is set in Olombia, a fictional society envisioned as an ideal community amidst the wilderness. Through this setting, Von Swartwout explores themes pertinent to social issues of her time, including the roles and rights of women, social organization, and the pursuit of an idealized society. The novel reflects the broader literary trend of utopian writing during that era, where authors used imaginative settings to critique contemporary societal norms and propose alternative social structures.
