"The Survey of Western Palestine: The Fauna and Flora of Palestine" by H. B. Tristram, published in London in 1884 by The Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund. This substantial natural history survey documents the flora and fauna of Palestine, with detailed coverage of the region's animal and plant life.
Quarto (8.75" x 11.5"), xxii + 455 pp., bound in full brown cloth over beveled boards, with gilt lettering and decoration to the upper board and spine, framed in blind rule. Illustrated with 13 color and 7 black-and-white plates depicting animals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
The binding shows edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners, and several dings along the board edges. The head and foot of the spine are chipped, with approximately the upper ½ inch of the spine lacking, though the gilt lettering remains unaffected. Both hinges are split with mesh visible. There is a gutter split at pages 104–105, with the signature nearly detached but held by the lower cord. The text block is shaken, and there are small spots of foxing throughout, heaviest at the front and rear of the text and affecting some plates. A Glasgow University Library stamp appears on the verso of the contents page.
A significant Victorian-era reference for collectors of Palestine, Holy Land natural history, zoology, botany, and the publications of the Palestine Exploration Fund.
