"Memoirs of the Court of King James the First" by Lucy Aikin, published in London by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in 1822. This Second Edition, in two volumes, offers a detailed historical portrait of the court of King James I and the people, personalities, and political world surrounding the early Stuart monarchy. An appealing set for collectors of British royal history, Jacobean England, and antiquarian historical works.
Octavo (5.25" x 8.25"). Two volumes bound in full tan calf with matching marbled edges and endpapers; the marbling on the top edges has faded. The spines feature six finely gilt compartments, with labels identifying the title, author, and volume number, while the remaining panels contain elaborate gilt motifs. A small label at the foot of each spine gives the place and year of publication. The spine hinges are rubbed and show wear. A bookplate on the front pastedown identifies previous ownership by Duckworth and features an image of a griffin's head. Heavy foxing extends from the third free endpaper through the title page.
