"The Life and Letters of Lafcadio Hearn," Volume I of 2, by Elizabeth Bisland, published in Boston and New York by Houghton, Mifflin and Company in 1906. This special “Manuscript” edition includes a page of Lafcadio Hearn's actual manuscript and was limited to 200 copies, printed and bound entirely uncut.
Octavo (6" x 9"), a brilliant copy in full dark blue cloth with a white paper label, housed in the original dark blue dust jacket with a gilt-stamped red label. Includes a cardboard slipcase with printed label, a frontispiece portrait of Lafcadio Hearn, and a spare printed paper spine label identifying the book as a first edition, cleanly tipped onto the rear endpapers.
Page 250 is torn halfway down the page. Despite this defect, the volume is notable for its scarce limited-edition format, original jacket and slipcase, and the inclusion of an authentic page of Hearn's manuscript—an especially interesting item for collectors of Lafcadio Hearn, literary manuscripts, biography, and Japanese literary history.
