From Wiki: The Royal Academy of Surgery is an old French institution founded in Paris, where, under the Ancien Régime, surgeons were trained. Founded in 1731 to replace the brotherhood of Saint-Côme and Saint-Damien, it was suppressed in 1793. It should not be confused with the National Academy of Surgery, founded in 1843. Established on December 18, 1731, the academy first took its place in the former anatomy amphitheater erected between 1691 and 1694 by the architect Joubert and the sculptor François Jacquin, for the brotherhood of Saint-Côme and Saint-Damien in the rue des Cordeliers and which still exists (at no. 5 of the current rue de l'École-de-Médecine). This building was the first medical school building in France to have been designed according to an architectural model specific to its function, inaugurating the genre of medical schools that would develop in the eighteenth and nineteenthcenturies1. New buildings were built on the orders of Louis XV between 1769 and 17742, creating the School of Surgery of Paris, on the site of the former Collège de Bourgogne, a little further down the same street (current no. 12)3. The architect Jacques Gondouin, influenced by Greek antiquity, built the central body with the main neo-classical façade, rue de l'École-de-Médecine, the inner courtyard of honour, the large amphitheatre and the Council room2. A Latin motto, consilio manuque ("by means of intelligence and hand") topped the coat of arms of the establishment. It was transferred in 1776 to these new buildings. It was thus the site of a good number of surgical advances: evacuation of the extradural hematoma Incision of the brain abscess by Jean-Louis Petit ; Tracheostomy in Diphtheria ; incision of the kidney in the infected lithiasis; Cataract treatment by lens extraction. The Royal Academy of Surgery, free of any link with the Faculty of Medicine and its dogmas, allowed eighteenth-century surgery to take major conceptual steps. It was to lay the foundations of the anatomical-clinical method and of a medical thought based on experimentation. The surgeons of the Academy noted their successes and failures, dissected the deceased patients, observed the lesions of the organs, and related them to the symptoms observed. They report to the assembly, debate and vote on the operating indications for this or that technique. The teaching provided encourages students to count the symptoms and clinical signs observed in order to make a diagnosis according to their number. The diagnosis is no longer a rhetoric but tries to become a proof. It was abolished, along with the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, by the Convention on 8 August 1793. The subsequent foundation of a "medical school" in 1794 and the rebirth in 1806 of the faculty of medicine within the University included the surgeons of the Royal Academy of Surgery and their valuable contributions, totally transforming the approach to the concept of "clinical" and giving the dawn of the nineteenth century the appearance of a new medical thought. It was replaced only in 1843 by the Society of Surgery of Paris.
