The book is a detailed account of John Petherick’s 16 years of travel and trade (primarily in the 1840s–1850s) across Egypt, Sudan (then commonly called the Soudan), and Central Africa. It reflects both his experiences as a British consul in Khartoum and his role in the growing European interest in the Nile River and the search for its source.
