"Scotia Illustrata sive Prodromus Historiae Naturalis" by Robert Sibbald, 1684. Edinburgh: printed at the printing office of James Kniblo, Joshua Van Solingen, and John Colmar, at the author’s expense. A substantial folio (10" x 14.75"), this scholarly Latin work comprises three books with indexes, bound as one volume, examining the natural history of Scotland, including its plants, animals, and minerals. Illustrated with 22 engraved plates on 11 leaves, bound at the rear of the text.

The book is bound in modern full green buckram with refreshed endpapers, a maroon leather spine label with gilt lettering, and lightly speckled red edges. There is very minor edgewear and light spine sun-fading. The text shows some spotting and marginal staining, with an early paper repair to the lower corner of the first page that does not affect the text. Bookseller's pencil notes appear neatly on the first free endpaper, and a leaf from a 12mo book featuring a portrait engraving of Sibbald is laid in. The verso of the title page bears the armorial bookplate of George Paton (1721–1807). ESTC R9747; Wing S3727.
