"Pharmacopoeia Officinalis & Extemporanea: Or, A Compleat English Dispensatory, In Four Parts. Containing 1. The Theory of Pharmacy, and The Several Processes Therein. II. A Description of The Officinal Simples, with Their Virtues and Preparations, Galenical and Chymical. III. The Officinal Compositions; being such of the London and Bates's Dispensatory, as are now in use: Together with some Others of Uncommon Efficacy, Taken from the most Celebrated Authors. IV. Extemporaneous Prescriptions, Distributed into Classes suitable to their Intentions in Cure" by John Quincy, published in London in 1718 by T. Bell, T. Varnam, and others. This influential early eighteenth-century pharmaceutical manual explores the theory and practice of pharmacy, medicinal simples and their preparations, compound remedies, and prescriptions used during the Georgian period. An important historical resource for collectors of medical literature, pharmacy history, and early apothecary practice.

Octavo (4.75" x 7.5"), 618 pages plus indexes. This Second Edition is bound in quarter black leather with corners over marbled boards, with gilt rules and gilt lettering to the spine. The front pastedown bears an advertising bookplate for S. A. D. Sheppard, Prescription Druggist of Boston, Massachusetts. The volume appears to have been rebound at an earlier date with replacement endpapers.

Condition: Complete, with small marginal tears to the first few leaves that do not affect the text. The binding shows edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners with minor loss, scuffed leather, and slight paper loss along the board edges. Marginal dampstaining occurs throughout, generally light but heavier toward the rear. A previous owner crossed out Quincy's name on the title page and at the end of the preface, where an ownership name may also appear. Despite these condition issues, this is a fascinating early medical work documenting the development of pharmaceutical knowledge and historical dispensing practices.
