"History of the Civil War in America" by M. le Comte de Paris, published in French by Calmann Lévy in Paris between 1881–1884 and 1890. This substantial seven-volume collection offers a French perspective on the American Civil War, making it an interesting resource for collectors of military history, nineteenth-century European interpretations of American history, and French-language historical works.
Octavo (5.25" x 8.75"). Seven volumes, complete, with Volume VII a married volume that differs in binding from the other six. Volumes I–VI are bound in quarter black pebbled leather over marbled boards, with five raised bands, gilt decoration, and gilt lettering to the spines. Volume VII has quarter dark brown leather with small corners over green and brown textured boards, four gilt-bordered raised bands, and gilt spine lettering; the upper board has some color loss near the corners.
Volumes I–VI have lightly speckled brown edges and marbled endpapers, while Volume VII has lightly marbled edges and floral printed endpapers. All volumes show edgewear, lightly bumped and rubbed corners—with wear through to the boards on Volumes I–VI—and light rubbing and occasional scuffing to the boards. Intermittent foxing appears throughout, heavier in some areas but generally not severe. An armorial bookplate belonging to Horace R. Sargent, Jr. is present on the front pastedowns of Volumes I–VI.
A complete, characterful set with a differing final-volume binding, offering a valuable opportunity to collect this extensive French-language history of the American Civil War.
