"Bracebridge Hall, or The Humourists" by Washington Irving, published in 1896 by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in New York and London. This attractive two-volume set belongs to the Surrey Edition and presents Irving’s celebrated literary sketches and humorous observations of English country life and character. The set is illustrated with 28 engraved plates, including five by Arthur Rackham.
Octavo (6" x 9"). Two volumes, complete. Bound in full cream cloth with an elegant architectural design in light green, yellow, and gilt, with gilt lettering on the beveled upper boards and similarly decorated spines. The rear boards are plain. The volumes feature gilt top edges and rough-cut remaining edges, with many pages still uncut.
The bindings show edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners, and ruffling at the head and foot of the spines. Volume I has a small ding to the thin edge of the upper board near the foot. A charming book-return poem sticker is centered on the front pastedown.
A beautiful decorative set, appealing to collectors of Washington Irving, classic American literature, illustrated books, and late Victorian book design.
